
Heritage, the monumental city of Toledo lies on a hill by the river Tagus, in Castilla – La Mancha, a few kilometers from Madrid, the capital city and central Spain. Toledo is a destination for visitors from the mainland interested in cultural tourism.
Toledo is known worldwide as the city of three cultures, was occupied for centuries by Jews, Christians and Arabs. One of the landmarks of Toledo is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, a piece of Gothic style. During the Spanish Civil War Alcázar of Toledo was totally destroyed during the siege by the Second Republic in 1936. After the war it was rebuilt and now contains the Library of Castilla – La Mancha (one of the largest public libraries in the Peninsula) and the Army Museum. Worth visiting the famous gates to the walled city. The main one is called the hinge of Muslim origin on which you can see a huge imperial coat of arms. The door of Alfonso VI is one of the leading exponents of Muslim art in Toledo, dating from 838. Another of the most famous doors is the Sun, the thirteenth century and ordered built by the Knights Hospitallers.
